The Power of Sepia: 30 Reasons I Prescribe It to Help Women Thrive

Sepia is undoubtedly one of my favourite remedies in homeopathy.
I love it because I’ve seen some amazing results with women who had become stuck in difficult physical and emotional states, often around major hormonal changes or different stages of their lives. They were exhausted, overwhelmed, irritable and at the end of their tether and then gradually started getting their spark back, feeling more like themselves and able to get on with life again.
From postnatal changes to fertility, problematic periods and menopausal symptoms, Sepia has such a wide scope of action. But it’s when you look at the woman behind those symptoms, her feelings about family and relationships and the demands of everyday life, that the Sepia picture really starts to make sense.
The emotional picture
She might be the woman who does everything for everyone else. She keeps the family going, remembers everything, organises everyone and somehow manages to keep going even when she is completely overwhelmed and exhausted.
When you love your family but want to get away
And then she can get to the point where she thinks: "I just want to get in the car and drive away."
And the funny thing is, she may not actually want to leave her family at all.
She loves them.
That's what makes it so confusing.
She can love her children dearly but find herself getting irritated when they come into the room.
She can love her partner but can’t bear them to touch her.
She can spend years looking after everyone else and then suddenly feel as though she can’t stand anyone asking anything of her.
She may feel guilty about this too because she thinks, "What's wrong with me? I have a good life. I love my family. Why do I feel like getting away from everyone?"
Feeling like a robot and no longer like yourself
Some women describe feeling like a robot. They are getting through the day, doing everything that needs to be done, but they don't really feel like themselves anymore.
Their patience has gone. Their libido may have disappeared. They may feel emotionally flat or simply fed up with constantly being needed.
And sometimes they tell me, "I've lost my mojo. I just want it back."
Sepia and the physical symptoms
This emotional picture can sit alongside a whole range of physical symptoms too. This is one of the reasons I might look at Sepia when a woman is experiencing hormonal changes, period problems, fertility difficulties, postnatal changes or symptoms around menopause.

Recognising yourself in Sepia isn't enough
It is very easy to read about a remedy and think,
That's me!
You might recognise the irritability, the exhaustion, the lack of libido or that desperate need to get away from everyone for a while.
But choosing a remedy isn't simply about finding a list of symptoms that sounds familiar.
It's the details that tell me more
When I'm taking a case, I'm interested in what is happening underneath those symptoms and how they fit together.
When did this start?
What was happening in your life when you first noticed the change?
What makes things better or worse?
How have your periods, emotions, relationships, energy and sense of yourself changed?
Sometimes the detail is what makes the difference.
You might tell me you're exhausted, but when we talk about it, I might discover that what you really mean is that you cannot bear anyone asking you for one more thing.
You might tell me you've lost your libido, but actually you don't want anyone touching you because you feel completely overwhelmed by being needed.
You might say you're irritable, but underneath that is a feeling that you've spent years giving to everyone else and you've got very little left.
Those details tell me much more than simply ticking irritable or exhausted on a list.
Is sepia the right remedy for you?
If you've been researching Sepia and parts of this article sound very familiar, you don't need to decide for yourself whether Sepia is your remedy.
Your story and what remedies might help you is exactly the kind of thing we can explore in a consultation.
Two women can have very similar hormonal symptoms and need completely different remedies because the rest of their stories are different.
