Five Homeopathic Remedies to Relieve Painful Periods

Did you know your period should be pain-free and should not take over your life?
Like me, you were probably told otherwise and learned to accept that painful periods and premenstrual tension are just part of being a woman.
Painful periods are not normal
But the truth is, it’s not “normal.”
It shouldn’t be a monthly ordeal of coping with debilitating cramps, backaches and surviving only on painkillers, while taking days off work or feeling like you just can’t function. Let’s not forget about the emotional rollercoaster side too – that’s a whole other story!
In Homeopathy, we prescribe according to your specific needs. There are hundreds of possible remedies for period problems, but here are five homeopathic remedies I’ll often consider for clients with painful periods.
Cimicifuga
Painful periods with darting/shooting pains that move across the pelvis from hip to hip or extend down the thighs. The more they bleed, the greater the pain. This is the reverse of Lachesis and they are often called the “Cold Lachesis.” They suffer from bouts of depression, “as if enveloped in a black cloud.”
Lachesis
There is intense pain before the period begins. They feel much better when the flow starts as the “wound up”, “pressure cooker” energy is relieved. The bleed can be heavy, dark and clotted with a foul odour. Headaches, flushing, irritability, suspicion or jealousy may accompany these symptoms. There is also intolerance of restrictive clothing around the neck or waist.
Nux Vomica
Irregular painful periods with constricting, spasm pains. The pain extends into the rectum or tailbone area. They suffer from constipation and have an urge to move the bowel before the period begins. They are impatient, irritable and easily offended. Symptoms are ease with warmth and rest and worsen with mental strain, and overindulgence in food or alcohol.
Pulsatilla
Painful periods can be late, light, irregular and changeable. Mood swings, crying and a surge of emotions are common. They feel better for affection and consolation.
Magnesia Phosphorica
Severe colicky, cramping period pains that feel better for warmth and pressure.
Sepia
Painful periods with an aching, dragging down, feeling as if the insides of the pelvis are going to fall out. Emotionally they feel indifferent, irritable, snappy and exhausted.
