There’s Nothing ‘Normal’ About Bad Periods

Eileen Scullion • August 28, 2021

Many women didn’t need the COVID era to bring the phrase “the new normal” into their lives.

They have had to get used to “the new normal” ever since they left puberty behind. Painful periods and the countless menstruation symptoms that accompany them were “normal”, we were told.

“Just part of being a woman.”

“Learn to live with it.”

Even now, I have clients who describe the extent of their doctor’s diagnosis as, “ difficult periods ,” with the contraceptive pill or surgical intervention the only solutions on the table. (If you’d like to know what a normal period should look like check out this link.)

So it was for Sania, aged 25, who came to see me about irregular, late, and missed periods that had been going on for a few years.

Her last missed period was three months previously. She felt it was about to start but it never did. Had this continued for another three months, her doctor suggested medication to induce her period. The long-term solution was the pill but Sania didn’t want to take it as she felt it would leave the underlying problem intact and ignored.

During her period she complained of unbearable stomach cramps and sore, tender breasts. She would feel emotional during periods and could get irritated at small things.

She also suffered from headaches that had worsened in the last three years. These could be premenstrual symptoms or stress-related.

She experienced night sweats several times each week.

Since childhood, she had also struggled with constipation and a sluggish bowel. The stools were hard balls and she would go approximately every other day.

Within three weeks of her first appointment with me, she was able to describe dramatic changes in her life.

“I’m jumping with joy. Three weeks after starting my remedy I got my period.

I feel energetic and my overall health feels great.

The unbearable period cramps have eased so much I barely notice them.

The night sweats have gone, as have the headaches.

The constipation has improved, the stools are easier and I am going daily now.

There is some normality again in my body. I never knew I could be ’normal’ with my periods and I didn’t know ‘pain-free’ was possible and could give you so much happiness.”

My client is delighted that she has been able to start the process of balancing her hormones gently and naturally without having to chemically kick-start her body into action.

We still have work to do to ensure her hormone balance continues but with all the other improvements that have taken place in such a short space of time, we know that order is being restored not only with her hormonal health but also with her bowels, digestive system, and emotions.

A great result and a happy client.
