Eileen Scullion • December 9, 2020

Are the dark, chilly winter months getting you down?Do you feel low and depressed with motivation for very little at all?Are you feeling COVID-19 is increasing your tension & anxiety with being restricted indoors?

Don’t worry! You are not alone!

The winter changes can affect us all but for some, this episode of feeling down and depressed can be more serious. This year is the first of its kind where we have the addition of COVID-19, alongside flu season, damp weather, shorter days and cold chilly temperatures. It’s no wonder that the majority of us will be feeling anything but vital, alive and energetic.

This period will be especially hard for people who also suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), sometimes referred to as the winter blues.

The good news is that whether your winter blues are mild or more serious as with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), Homeopathy provides a safe and natural way to boost your spirits and lift your moods so that the joys of the sunlight can be felt, even on the darkest of days.

What is Seasonal Affective Disorder?

SAD is a type of recurring winter depression that affects people each winter between September and April, in particular during December, January and February. The lack of sunlight and shortening of daylight hours are the primary known factors of SAD.

For many people SAD is a seriously disabling illness, preventing them from functioning normally without medical treatment such as antidepressants. For others, it is a mild but debilitating condition causing discomfort and is often referred to as winter blues.

The key symptoms of SAD include:

  • Feeling depressed, despondent, hopeless, despairing or apathetic
  • Sleep problems
  • Lethargy and fatigue , often incapacitating, making it very difficult or impossible to carry out normal routines
  • Overeating, craving for carbohydrates and sweet foods leading to weight gain
  • Difficulty with concentration and memory
  • Irritability and/or anxiety
  • Avoidance of social contact
  • Loss of libido
  • Extremes mood changes
  • Agitation and restlessness

Homeopathy and the treatment of Seasonal Affective Disorder

Homeopathy provides a safe and natural way to help a person struggling with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) so they can feel brighter without any unpleasant side effects.

This holistic system of medicine takes an individualist approach to each person’s experience of coping with the symptoms of SAD. Helping someone who is severely affected by the dark and cold of winter involves selecting a remedy that best matches their unique symptoms to stimulate the body’s own natural healing response.  No two people experience their illness in exactly the same way and therefore they would not necessarily receive the same homeopathic remedies.

Tips to Help with Seasonal Affective Disorder

What else can you do alongside homeopathy?

  • Get more natural sunlight.
  • Keep your curtains and blinds open.
  • Make sure you spend time in natural daylight.
  • Take a brisk walk outside. A walk in the midday winter sunlight can significantly lift the spirits.
  • Eat a healthy well-balanced diet of fresh foods, complex carbohydrates and fish containing essential fatty acids.
