Homeopathy for Travel Sickness

It’s summertime so there is a lot more travelling as we take to the roads, seas and air for our vacation. It will also be the time when we will say or hear lots more of the dreaded “I am going to be sick”.

Travel Sickness is characterised by symptoms of nausea, dizziness, fatigue and vomiting. It can also be accompanied by pallor, sweating and increased salivation. It can occur in many transport modes including car, boat and airplane.

Homeopathy Remedies for Travel Sickness

Homeopathy has a number of remedies that are invaluable in helping cope with Travel Sickness.  Here are a six key remedies that can be considered when symptoms match.

Aconite : Where fear and restlessness predominate with heat, dryness and a great thirst for cold drinks.

Borax veneta: Symptoms predominate whenever there is a sudden downward motion such as during air turbulence during flights when the plane dips suddenly, the plane lands or the ship dips. This creates anxiety, confusion, fidgeting and distress. It is also useful for people who dread and fear the descent for landing.

Cocculus indicus: Symptoms of nausea, dizziness, increased saliva and the person urgently want to lie down to prevent vomiting. Sea sickness, motion sickness or watching the movements of surroundings aggravates. They feel worse for sight or smell of food and even the thought of it can bring on the nausea. F eels faint and is unusually worse in the fresh air. Worse after eating or drinking, sitting up, or moving.

Nux Vomica: Faint-like feeling with nausea and the person feels sensitive to the slightest movement. Other symptoms can include splitting headache, indigestion, and/or constipation. The mood is one of irritability.

Petroleum: Nausea, dizziness, heavy headache, vomiting, cold sweat, ravenous hunger and eating temporarily brings relief as does heat. Fresh air aggravates nausea. The person feels confused and is easily vexed.

Tabacum: This is a deathly, intermittent violent nausea with vomiting from the slightest motion with an empty sinking feeling in the stomach. There is a profuse cold sweat and the face is deathly pale and drawn and the person feels better in the cool fresh air. (opposite of Petroleum). The person may appear anxious and restless starting during their sleep. Better for fresh air and worse in a stuffy environment or from tobacco. Weak, pale, trembling, and sweating.

Practical Measures for Travel Sickness

Practical measures include avoiding large meals or alcohol before travelling and avoiding reading during your trip. Sip a drink or chew some ginger and sit with your head back or lie down and breathe deeply.

If you travel regularly and suffer from travel sickness or motion sickness, consider a consultation to help rebalance the body to avoid continued repetition of symptoms.

Happy Travelling!
