Overwhelmed, anxious, fearful: this is no way to live life. Yet I see more and more patients at their wits’ end with these crippling symptoms.
World Health Organisation research shows that around 280 million people worldwide suffer from anxiety and it affects 4.6% of all females compared to 2.6% of males. (1)
By the time people come to me, they have, between them, tried everything from conventional medicine to hypnosis, cognitive behaviour therapy, over-the-counter anxiety relief, meditation and deep breathing. These strategies may help manage the anxiety, but they don’t always address the root cause.
Rachel was a classic example. She opened up to me with a list of fears that had defied all attempts to dispel them.
“I’m afraid of so many things and it’s holding me back in life. I’m super-sensitive, take everything to heart and I worry what others think of me.
I’m always looking for approval.
I will replay conversations all night, wondering, ‘Did I say the wrong thing or did I come across as stupid?’
I’m afraid of aggression or people shouting.
I’m afraid of heights, noise and the dark.
I’m afraid of traffic or crossing the road.
I’m afraid of being left alone and worry about getting older.
Fear is holding me back. I want to learn to drive, to travel and to try new things.
I’m afraid of making mistakes so I don’t try anything new or I worry for a long time before I do.
I’m fearful of hurting other people.
I wake up feeling down and depressed.
I have a short attention span and I can’t finish things.
I feel like a failure. I fear failure yet I’m afraid of succeeding.
I get angry but I don’t express it. I go along with it for peace.
I have a hollow feeling in my chest and I feel panicky inside.”
Rachel had been fully proactive in trying to manage her anxiety, with walks in nature, yoga, exercise, meditation, aromatherapy oils and massage. While all these strategies offered comfort to some extent, they didn’t necessarily address the roots of her anxiety. This left the life she wanted for herself distressingly out of reach…
“I’d like to be free of anxiety and panic.
I’d like to have the freedom to do what I want without worrying.
I’d like to be more confident and to like myself.
I’d like to do things without fear or worry so that I could feel lighter and more content.
I’d like to feel less burdened and weighed down by my fears. I crave freedom.
I want to speak up for myself. I want to try new things.
I want to feel happier and more positive. I want to get back to feeling creative and get my life back in balance”.
Homeopathy focuses not just on the symptoms of anxiety like Rachel’s, but also on its source, in order to offer both short- and long-term relief, as part of a natural, long-lasting solution.
I saw Rachel for 6 months with one visit per month. In that time, we established that her problems stemmed from childhood, so I used tailored remedies that took into consideration not just her symptoms, but also her life story and family history, which had left a huge imprint on how she perceived the world.
I also used remedies such as Aconite to help her through periods of acute anxiety, such as when learning to drive or travelling.
Homeopaths recognise that anxiety affects your whole being. Your body and mind are not distinct from each other but are intimately connected, so anxiety can create physical, behavioural and psychological reactions all at the same time.
Because of this, physical problems like palpitations, racing thoughts, sleeplessness and digestive issues –all frequently associated with anxiety – are also considered as part of your individualised holistic care plan.
Anxiety reveals itself in different ways with different people. For some, it is severe and debilitating, while for others it can be mild and manageable.
In just one month after Rachel’s remedy, the change was dramatic. She reported during our session together:
“Since taking the remedy I am much calmer and I’m really grateful for things. I don’t have that desperate anxiety feeling.
I’m working hard but I still have time for myself – doing my walks and yoga. I feel good, I feel alive. I believe anything is possible. I really feel that way.
I am enjoying time on my own and taking time for myself – TV, baking, and eating well.
It’s like a dream. I have all these great ideas now.
I’ve lost weight without even trying.
Old hurts, I’m working through them. Now the memories don’t last long; they melt away. The emotions have gone from a storm to a breeze.
The difference is I’m not wearing myself out. The remedies have helped. I didn’t have the vision to go on and they helped me in a gentle way. I have been trying to get past this point for years. I was on my knees when I came here.
I used to worry about things. Now I sort it out there and then.
The passion has awakened. I’ve come into the person I want to be. I can be myself without worrying about what others say.
I feel more confident about myself and what I want.
I now say what I have to say. Before I would have kept quiet and worried about it all day. Now I am quite firm about what I want.
I use to read self-help books, now I read books that interest me…
I take care of myself first, now – that’s the way it will be”.
It’s possible to increase your confidence, be less anxious and look after your own needs as well as those around you, without losing yourself, and homeopathy can help you achieve this.
