Feeling overwhelmed, anxious and fearful is no way to live life. Yet, I’m seeing increasing numbers of patients with these debilitating symptoms.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), research shows that 3.6% of the global population is suffering from anxiety and it affects 4.6% of females as compared to 2.6% of males. (1)
By the time people come to me they can have tried everything from conventional medicine to hypnosis, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, over the counter anxiety relievers, meditation or deep breathing. These strategies may well have offered relief in managing the anxiety, but don’t necessarily always address the root cause.
The good news is that homeopathy offers both short and long term relief, for a natural long-lasting solution.
We recognise that anxiety affects your whole being. As your body and mind are intimately connected and not separate, anxiety can create a physical, behavioural and psychological reaction all at the same time. Therefore physical problems such as palpitations, racing thoughts, sleeplessness, digestive issues often associated with your anxiety, are also considered as part of your individualised holistic care plan.
Anxiety can manifest differently for everyone. For some people, it is severe and debilitating, while for others it can be mild and manageable.
When I first met Rachel she described her anxiety like this…
“I’m afraid of so many things and it’s holding me back in life. I’m super sensitive, take everything to heart and I worry what others think of me.
I’m always looking for approval.
I will replay conversations all night wondering did I say the wrong thing or did I come across as stupid.
I’m afraid of aggression or people shouting.
I’m afraid of heights, noise and the dark.
I’m afraid of traffic or crossing the road.
I’m afraid of being left alone and worry about getting older.
Fear is holding me back. I want to learn to drive, to travel and to try new things.
I’m afraid of making mistakes so I don’t try anything new or worry for a long time before I do.
I’m fearful of hurting other people. I’m super sensitive and I take everything to heart.
I wake up feeling down and depressed.
I have a short attention span and I can’t finish things.
I feel like a failure. I fear failure yet I’m afraid of succeeding.
I get angry but I don’t express it. I go along with it for peace.
I have a hollow feeling in my chest and I feel panicky inside”.
And all despite the fact that Rachel was very proactive in trying to manage her anxiety with walks in nature, yoga, exercise, meditation, aromatherapy oils and massage. While all these strategies helped on some levels, they didn’t necessarily address the root problem which stemmed back to her childhood.
“I’d like to be free of anxiety and panic.
I’d like to have the freedom to do what I want without worrying.
I’d like to be more confident and like myself.
Id like to do things without fear or worry so that I could feel lighter and more content.
I’d like to feel less burdened and weighed down by my fears. I crave freedom.
I want to speak up for myself. I want to try new things.
I want to feel happier and more positive. I want to get back to feeling creative and get my life back in balance”.
I saw Rachel over a period of 6 months with one visit per month. I used acute remedies such as Aconite to help her through periods of acute anxiety, for example when learning to drive or travelling.
I also used individualised remedies that took into consideration her symptoms as described above as well as her family history and life story, which had left a huge imprint on how she perceived the world.
In just one month after her remedy, the change was simply dramatic. She reported during our session together:
“Since taking the remedy I am much calmer and I’m really grateful for things. I don’t have that desperate anxiety feeling.
I’m working hard but I still have time for myself – doing my walks and yoga. I feel good, I feel alive. I believe anything is possible. I really feel that way.
I am enjoying time on my own and taking time for myself – TV, baking and eating well.
It’s like a dream. I have all these great ideas now.
I’ve lost weight without even trying.
Old hurts, I’m working through it. Now the memories don’t last long, it melts away. The emotions have gone from a storm to a breeze.
The difference is I’m not wearing myself out. The remedies have helped. I didn’t have the vision to go on and they helped me in a gently way. I have been trying to get past this point for years. I was on my knees when I came here.
I use to worry about things. Now I sort it out there and then.
The passion has awakened. I’ve come into the person I want to be. I can be myself without worrying what others say.
I feel more confident about myself and what I want.
I now say what I have to say. Before I would have kept quiet and worried about it all day. Now I am quite firm about what I want.
I use to read self-help books, now I read books that interest me…
I take care of myself now first – that’s the way it will be”.
