“It is more important to know what sort of person has a disease than to know what sort of disease a person has.”
Hippocrates (460-377 B.C.)
As an holistic approach to health, homeopathy takes a wider view of illness and the causes of disease. It recognizes that the symptoms are only the body’s way of letting us know that things are out of balance and each person expresses this imbalance differently. Therefore it is necessary to treat the individual and not the disease.
Take for example, a case of a headache. One person may have a headache with a dull pain on the left side; it feels worse in the heat and better when they are outside. The headache always starts when they begin to relax after a stressful period.
Another person’s headache comes on suddenly with intense throbbing pain, felt mainly on the right side. The pain gets worse in the sunlight and feels better when keeping perfectly still. The headache starts after being out in windy weather.
Taking into account the individual’s unique response, a remedy that matches the person’s symptoms on a physical, emotional and mental level is prescribed.
The remedy given stimulates the person’s own natural healing ability, strengthens the immune system and encourages a long-term gentle return to health.
“Those who merely treat the effects of disease are like those who imagine that they can drive away the winter by brushing the snow from the door. It is not the snow that causes winter, but the winter that causes snow.”
Paracelsus, 16th century philosopher and physician
